Default Creating External HD???

ok i have an extra 200GB HD laying around and would like to turn it into an external HD for my laptop... I need to format it and add a new OS to it, but am i able to do that from my laptop just plugging it up???

First of all you wouldn't want any OS installed onto an external drive or drive setup in an external enclosure since once you start the laptop without the drive plugged in the configuration would change if you take the laptop from place to place.

External drive enclosures see low prices and simply plug into a usb port while some see Firewire or eSata for sata drives there. The best use for any external drive is for storage and backup purposes in case the main OS drive gets trashed or simply fills up too fast.
