it should, i dont see why not, unless its a Single Core CPU, then there might be some bottlenecking.
But if you got a good Dual Core CPU, you should do fine since all the games thats released dont use any quads, so quads wont benefit you that much until games starts to use quads

even though intel spanks the fuck out of AM2's offerings in every measurable test known to man, AM2 will probably not be the bottleneck in an 4870 system.

^^ True, the $1500 QX9650 does beat the crap out of the $225 Phenom 9950

@ OP, it depends what resolution you play at and what CPU you mean exactly. At lower resolutions, pretty much any CPU will bottleneck the HD 4870, but as the resolution is increased, the bottleneck will be eliminated.
AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE @ 4.0GHz + TU120E lapped - MSI 770-CD45 AM3 - 2x2GB OCZ DDR3 1333MHz - Sapphire HD 4870 - Samsung Spinpoint 500GB 7200RPM 16MB cache HDD - Tagan TG600-BZ Piperock - (Currently open test bed) - Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit.
