Default CPU upgrade question

HI, I have a Compaq Evo D510, and i want to start playing old games. I want to upgrade to a 3.6 GHz processor but i don't know what kind i need. Does having a Intel pentium 4 mean i can buy ANY pentium 4 processor? Can you please explain what are good processors or not? Please help!

here are my specs:
2.4 GHz processor
250 GB HDD 7200 rpm
1.2 GB RAM (im upgrading to 2)
64 MB video memory
Just ask if you need more

Thanks in advance!!!

If you want to play games, upgrading from a p4 to a slightly faster p4 will not increase performance. I you want to play older games, the p4 should just run fine. The onboard video is most likely killing you.

Your computer uses a motherboard that has a Socket 478 for the processor. Unfortunately, Socket 478 has been phased out and the processors are also no longer available. You could find them on eBay though.

Yes. In the long run you would be better served buying a new system.

Those are still Pentium 4 processors, it is advisable to try to get at least a computer with a dual core processor so you have some headroom to upgrade later on.
