ok let me try to explain this... i just got done building a new computer... computer turns on fine but after about 2 min a red cpu led on the motherbord comes on.. so i was taking it as the cpu is overheating.. took of the heatsink and was looking at it and the bottom does not even have any thermal paste on it so i am thinking its not even touching the cpu... did i get the wrong heat sink for my chip???

intel core 2 quad = (cpu)

this is link to heat sink

Erm thermal paste isn't required but it does help. Check your temps using some kind of program like speedfan.

You can run the CPU without paste, but don't think it's going to be cooler tahn with the paste. Some CPUs might have little improvements, bt some will have major. Try reseating your CPU heatsink. That usually comes with a pad, so it can be used as well.

Although, Thermal paste is better.
