Yes a 9600XT will run Source and you should notice a big difference over on-board video.

Does the processer matter? Is mine fast or slow

How well would it work with a cheaper card. what card could be cheaper and still run CS 1.6 w/out lag and mabe a little slow on soure?

Celerons are pretty bad, but it's still good enough to play CS without too much lag.

Yes, the card will run CS at max settings with no lag. The newer games it wont run as high but it will run them fine.

i have an older PC and run CS:S at nice settings. i have a 5700LE overclocked pretty well 500/575. my PC runs CS 1.6 just fine, and source at about 34fps.

here is what i have:

P4 1.3GHz
640MB PC800 RDRAM
5700LE 128mb GPU
Soundblaster Live 5.1 24bit Soundcard
2X20GB HDs
XP Pro

runs just fine for me, so i dont see why it wont for you.
