Default copying DVD's on a mac (legeally)

My teacher has some old 8mm tapes he had made into DVDs, and for christmas, he wants to give copies to his brother + sister, but he doesn't know how to do it. What software would he need to beable to rip the dvd, and burn it?

P.S. this isn't illegal, so mods, don't close the thread please.

This will actually work for commercial DVDs as well, but it should be fine for your purpose:

Anyway, the main program for burning things on a mac is Toast, but it's $80 unless you get it from **somewhere else**.
