I'd still bet that it didn't fry. Been working at a shop since 2006 and even back then CPUs were not frying left and right due to dead heatsink fans. If his computer is even that old it shouldn't be an issue.

I've seen a few though it was years years ago. It usually was AMD CPUs that fried. Even up to today they run hot.
