oh yes, i have also used different ide cables, with drives on different ide channels, on the same one, and it still gets errors from 59% all the way to 100%

Preety sure it's the CPU or mobo. These are the only two ones. If the P4 is LGA 775, you cold swap it with yours. If not, then try to get a different CPU.
