Default Computer keeps lagging/freezing

I have a Toshiba Laptop running Windows XP Home Edition. I use a school-Provided MCafee virus protection software and I have all Microsoft updates.

Recently, I find that my computer will lag, I can still move the mouse around, but everything else freezes. I can't click anything, and after several seconds, I can click things again. I don't know what could possibly be making this happen, but it is incredibly frustrating when I'm trying to do work.

Does anyone have any solutions?

Download AVG free 8.5 and run it. McAfee is a horrible anti virus, you can also try Avast

http://www.avast.com/

it just sounds like a simple virus.

Do you know how to get into safe mode?

The school provided Mcafee software should be doing the job as long as you keep it updated.

Have you installed any new software before this started happening?
