I would like to make sure I don't lose all my stuff on my first computer, it's a Compaq Presario SR1500NX with Windows XP and the 2nd service pack.

I think I may have found something worthwhile, it's called Clickfree. I'm just about to search for some real world user reviews. I would appreciate anyones input on this Clickfree product. thank you in advance.

Sounds almost like an advertisement...

I'd probably prefer to buy a cheap external drive and back everything I want up to that, and possibly hold an image of the drive in its current state too like bruinator says.

I find after something happens, I like to start cleaner, so would only install what I want

After my power supply blew up, I'm in need of a external drive too, as I'm really worried I'm going to lose all my data (I honestly though RAID 1 would be enough for now...haha).

SyncToy by Microsoft I believe syncs drives too, but from my knowings of the program, its not very intuitive.

Many thanks bruinator and Kage, the acronis was looking really good and I seriously wanted it, but then as usual I read some bad stuff about the product and was scared away. here I'll post some reviews. I found another item I'm really interested in as well, I'll make a new thread and if I could get your opinions on that I would really appreciate it. it's called Rebit.

Yes but I'm such a noob I wouldn't know what to back up, honestly the fewer choices I have the better lol... but thank you for that link, perhaps when I'm more adept.
