Question Complicated Build, Need Help :)

Hello

Yesterday my brother’s computer broke, I tried fixing it and in the process I think I broke one of the HDD pins and CDRW-DVD pins. My father gave the computer to one of his so called “computer tech” guys and he sad in order to fix the HDD its going to cost around $300 (Maybe a bit less) + the cost of a new CDRW-DVD, my brother sad he had some important stuff on the HDD that he would like to save. The computer that my brother has is old; I think it has P4 (around 2 GHz), 700mb of ram & I gat him NVIDIA 6800 about 1 year ago. I was planning on giving my computer to my brother in about 2 month (my comp is in my sig) & I was planning on getting the top of the line one for my self, once the new CPU’s come out I will compare them and make my choice + the new 9800 will come in November.

As some of you might notice this total repair is going to cost around $400, plus-minus, I honestly think his entire computer doesn’t cost that much lol. The bottom line is my brother needs his own computer to use for at least 2 more months, but spending so much on just a repair is crazy.

What I was thinking is to forget about the HDD repairs (he will get over it) and assembling an almost new computer for him, prob no more then $500 so he can use it for the next 2 month, and then change the parts from the rig that I or should I say we will build now and put them inside my rig, that’s in my sig. If you take a look at my sig, my CPU & Ram are not exactly new… Will it be possible to get him a Dual core, Motherboard, DD2 Ram, some very small HDD maybe 20G? & maybe new power supply, everything for about $500? I am trying to save money here and still get a nice rig at the end. The parts that I will be switching are CPU, Motherboard & Ram, everything else I think can be as is.

Can you guys help? I am open for suggestions.

Thanks.

Yeah i got an athlon X2 4000+ and 2 gigs of ddr2 800 and a mobo for £100 which converts to a bout $200 but things are cheaper over there too so it should be even less

This is what I gat, a bit 2 much then what I was asking 4...

If I can get the Q6600 and 2G of ram + evrything else for under $500 that would be great! I have an old Big Alienwhere case, I think its full tower, I would say its maybe 5 years old...I have no idea what kind of power fupply it needs, but I think it haz to be atleast 550-600 wats.

This is pretty much the best you can do for $500:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ $170
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103773

2 GB G.Skill DDR2-800 $75
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231098

Gigabyte mobo $80
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128034

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB hard drive $70
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148262

Antec TruePower Trio 550W PSU $70
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371002

Those are some pretty nice parts, comes out to $465. Salvage the rest of the parts from his old computer, and you'll have a fully functional PC. All of the above parts are great, and should be good enough to use in your next build. Just add a video card and you're pretty much set.

EDIT - I can tell right now you're going to want to try to downgrade the PSU to save money. If at all possible, do not. The PSU is really one of the most important components in the computer, and shouldn't be overlooked. That is one of the best PSUs for the money out there today, and really with the rebate it's a steal.

Q6600 is much better. But then again, it's over $100 more. I also typed that wrong, I meant to say the 6000+, not the 5200+. Edited.

Well if you say that Q6600 is much better, I guess I can then expand the budjet a bit bigger, $600 tops. Also he will need the CDRW-DVD (i thinks thats what you call it) So he can burn cd's and watch dvd's..etc.

I have to go to college now, and i would greatelly appreciate if someone can gimme a hand with picking the parts.

1. CPU = Q6600
2. 2G of Ram
3. PSU
4. MOBO
5. CDRW-DVD (Something cheep, something that he can use to play his games on & burn CD's. In 2 month he will have 2 lightscrip cd-dvd rw's)

6. HDD, 16m catch, 7200rpm (something small) coz in 2 month he will have 800G in raid 0

Total = $600 MAX.

Keep in mind that this is only for 2 month, and then this parts will be intergrated into the rig in my cpec

Thanks

3. Antec TruePower Trio 550W - $70:

That comes out to $605. Believe me, even though you said you don't want a big hard drive, that's an awesome hard drive. It's the fastest 7200 RPM hard drive out there.

Thanks freestyler105

Like I sad b4 this build will be only temporally, after 2 month I will add more stuff thats in my sig. I will add X1950XTX, 2X 400GB SATA2 16MB cache RAID 0 (800G Total), & Zalman CNPS9500 Cooler & Antec P180 Case.

Will all this pars that you gat from newegg, be competable with my current parts from my rig? (the once that i mensioned on top) & do I really need an aftermarket cooler like the "Arctic Cooling pro 7" for this 2 month? coz I have Zalman9500 That I wil install in 2 month.

EDIT

O WOW I FORGAT TO MENSION 1 THING, HIS CURRENT VID CARD IS AN AGP TYPE ! WILL THAT WORK ON THAT MOBO NO RIGHT? & IN 2 MONTH I WILL GIVE HIM A PCI CARD THE X1950XTX, I DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT MOBO'S, BUT AGP & PCI REQUIRE DIFF SLOTS RIGHT? IF YES IS IT POSSEBLE TO GET A MOBO THAT HAS BOTH AGP AND PCI SLOTS? & WILL IT STILL BE CONCIDERED A GOOD MOBO FOR THE Q6600 or E6600?

By the way, when I sad Q6600 Is a must, think I ment the E6600, Very sorry. Do u think I still should go with the Q? Or does the E offer something that Q doesnt? Coz I mean very few applications/games will be using more then 2 cores in the next 2 years. My brothers room gets VERY HOT! does Q generats MUCH more heat then the E?

Thanks
