Combining .srt files with avi videos?...need help

I want to play a video but the file contains a .srt file which i know is for subtexts. I installed directvobsub and in VLC player I checked the use sub box. The file is located in the same folder as the avi movie file and is named the same, but I can't get the subtexts to display.

Is there any thing I'm doing wrong or is there another program to use?
