My situation: Freshman student working on first semester of college, living in the dorms during the week (Mon-Fri), home on the weekends. Come home sometimes during the week too. No computer currently but a netbook.

My plan: Buying desktop @$1700, laptop @$599-650. In other words, I'm thinking about persuing a desktop/laptop combo.

Desktop build will be, in short: i7-3570k, HAF 932, SSD, two HDDs at 1TB RAID 0, 850W PSU, GTX 670. Just to give a general idea of the type of machine I plan to get. This desktop will remain in the dorm.

Laptop I'm looking at is a lenovo at $629, 1600x900 with an i5.

Thoughts? What did you guys do when you went to college?

Things to consider:

1. What you're going to be using the computer/laptop for, and what is actually worth having, in regards of cash, performance, and use you'll get out of it. For example, don't have a processor like that, if all you're going to need processing is a word processor.

2. ...nevermind, I've pretty much covered it all above.

With these sort of things, what you're going to USE that laptop/computer for is very important.
