Lightbulb CD drive not reading properly

Why would my cd rom drive fail to read any cd's I put into them...I've been told that I probably have somethign loose inside my computer...but how do I check for this and what am I looking for inside the computer? I'm a real novice as far as computers go so any feedback is appreciated. Thanks so much...also my cd burner stopped working also...any advice or tips on which cd burner is good...or if there are any available for download on off the web? Thanks

Relax,Does it appear at startup ? does it have a drive letter in My Computer ? Is it listed in sysdm ?
Is it just a cdrom or a cd-rw or a dvd ? Big difference.
