Can't Save Images as JPEG

When I go to save a picture on the internet (my browser is internet explorer) I can only save it in bitmap format. I think this began to happen after I installed office 2000. When I downloaded the program I already had a trial version of 2003. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but it might so I decided to mention it. Clearing my temporary internet files did not work. I don't know what to do now. I searched the internet and realized that this is a fairly common problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

try sending a bitmap in a email. see if it automaticaly gets resized.
