Cannot play MGS 1 or 2

I installed Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 on my computer and neither will play. When I start MGS 1 I get an error message and it shuts down. When I start MGS 2 I get only audio and a black screen. I exceed the system requirements for both games and I can play newer games like UT2004. What's the problem?

Windows XP w/SP2. MGS2 was made in 2003, so it should be fine with XP. MGS1 is from 2000, so maybe there's a problem there with my OS.

Ah crap. You must have an Nvidia video card to play. Maybe they should list that under system requirements... In the review I read, which was two years old, it said ATI was working on a patch that would make the game work. Maybe I'll look for that when my ATI card comes. Until then I'll stick with the PS2.
