it's main use will be gaming, but i will still do a bit of school work on it.

Get an athlon 64 easily for the gaming....get 1gb ram of course

for video card....if nvidia which it should be get evga or gigabyte or if u want all the extra stuff get msi and for ati get sapphire or powercolor

and for a CPU i was thinking of a AMD Athlon 64 3800+

yeah, dont spend money for a sound card if it comes with the motherboard
