broadband modem woes

Hi,
I'm having some problems with my broadband modem. When I plug it into the USB port, I get the usual ba-da windows sound telling me my computer has recognised it, then instantly i get the ba-dum sound telling me windows can no longer recognise it. :(
I know its not the modem:
(a) its working on this (different) computer
(b) I have two, I get the same effect
(c) all the other USB devices plugged into my computer work perfectly (mouse and external HD)
(d) I've tried the modem in all the other USB ports

In fact I reckon the problem is probably caused by the fact that I (accidentally) imported my old registry that was on my old computer (note to others, keep backups, dont use them!!) So, two problems (potentially) presented!

1. Can I make windows not automatically eject the modem?

if that isnt possible (I'd prefer to keep the registry the same really, I've had some bad experiences)

2. Can I restore my registry?
Keeping in mind:
I do not have a recent backup
I've already tried system restore, I dont have any restore points :(

Are you sure you don't have any restore points, like from when you installed any new software or drivers etc?

Try updating your usb drivers, the modem is probably usb 2.0 and your drivers may only be usb 1.1.

I'm certain I dont have any restore points, I've decided that from now on its going to be regular lol.
I'll check the drivers, but as all the other USB ports work...
