When you have high speed connection, it's easier for hackers to locate your systems IP and then start messing it up and playing around with your system, they just need to find an open port and then your screwed if you don't have any security.

Not quite true..

You need to find open ports then you must run a trojan on their computer. Usually sent via malicious email or some sort.

I'm behind a NAT so I don't bother with a firewall and Windows XP seems to have it's own anyway (don't know if it's any good!).

Firewall isn't totally necessary but antivirus I would recommend. LK I'd be interested to see if you found any viruses if you were to do a scan..
