Default better performance?

I was just wondering would updating my bios and getting windows vista/xp 64bit give me better performance in games and in general? My bios are 1 year old and im using windows xp 32. What could i do to get better performance. Not that im doing bad id just like to get the best outa my new computer.

for the most part updating anything in general will help one way or the other, go for it
