Beginning Programming

Stupid question probobly, but i would like to begin learning some coding and programming, and would like to know where to begin. For example, which OS should i use (i hear linux may be better) and stuff like that. Plus, any e books or tutorials you guys may have bookmarked could help... (i would like to start w/ html and javascript)...
