Battery Discharging

My Sony Model VGN NW240F laptop's battery discharges when it is shut off. It completely discharges in abt a week. I have formatted the HD and reinstalled win 7and it didn't help.
I have had the computer abt 3 yrs. It just started doing this abt 4 mos ago.
What can I do?

Check if Battery discharges when disconnected from the machine.

No...battery holds it's charge when I removed it from the computer.

Sleep? Hibernate? No internal CMOS battery?
Some laptops will tap the battery even when the system is powered off to keep the CMOS clock alive.
In sleep or hibernate, I can't recall at the moment, the system will tap the battery to keep the memory alive.
However a bad cell in the battery can be deceiving. A bad cell may show a good charge while not under a load. Add a load and the charge will run down quickly.
You say the battery is 3 years old so my money's on NiCad's which are notorious for developing a charge level memory. They look ok till you slap a load on them.
You can take it to Batterys Plus and have them load test it.
