Default Barebone laptop

Ummm, so I hate all the crap that comes on off the shelf comps. What I'm wondering is can I build a laptop. Or will I get more for my money off the shelf. Im still deciding whether I will run ubuntu or windows on it.

why not buy one off the shelf and just wipe and do a clean install as soon as you get it, problem solved.

yeah, I helped a friend out and looked into a barebones lappy for him and the prices I saw for the barebones averaged out maybe $100 less than the average deal on a open box or recertified, fully functional laptop, and that was without the processor, hdd, memory and operating system...
