Default backups

Howdy all!
THis is my first post on this forum. Glad I found you. Anyway...

So it's about time to reinstall win XP and I need to make sure that all of my files are backed up safely to my external hard drive. THe files are there, but want to be sure that they are safe where they are. THis is my first time doing this solo, and I want to do it right. If the files are there, can I just go ahead and do it and not worry? Or do I need to do something extra to make sure I dont lose them? Also, programs cannot be transfered to an external correct? Thanks for your time and help all.

yeah they can be, just make sure your external is unplugged when you install, so you dont get confused with drives when you format
