Default Backup operating system and then restore?

Ok, soon Im getting an old windows 98, but a good windows 98, with an 80gb hdd. I am going to use the parts inside it and add it into my build. But, I might atcually have to use the PC in a couple of months. The HDD inside the 98, I want to put in my XP as a secondary HDD, now, if i open it as slave, copy all the files over onto a backup HDD, and then completly wipe it, is it possible to then copy all the files back over, restoring the operating system and files if i have to use the 98 again?
