Default Backing up my hd

I want to copy all the files off my harddrive onto my external harddrive. But If I open up my C: drive, select everything, hit copy, it will not allow me to copy everything and paste it into my external haddrive. I figure there must be someway to do this, and i really wasnt expecting copying and pasting my whole harddrive to work .

I get an error saying cannot copy NTUSER it is currently being used. I close any program thats not needed to keep my computer actually running, and i still get this error. How can I completly copy the contents of my hd onto my external one?

Karma/rep is always appreciated

There are only 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who can read binary, and those who can't.

There are many, many programs that can create a hard drive image. Also, you should be able to copy a file, even if it's in use. Make sure that you're copying and not cutting. If that doesn't work, look around for a backup program.
