How much of a performance difference will I notice between the 256MB version of the HD 3850 and the 512MB version?

maybe 1680x1050 if I get a new screen, but probably 1280x1024

The 512MB might be worth it then. As resolution increases, you're going to need more VRAM to hold textures, etc.

1280x1024 is a high resolution. For newer games, you want the 512 mb version.

I'm satisfied with my 8800GT, and would recommend it if you want to spend the extra money.
