just wondering if anyone know any good and free software from the web, that detects viruses etc.? i have Norton Antivirus, but it says i should update which cost heaps. i also have ad-ware SE personal and spybot-search and destroy. are those good enough? or are their any better ones? cause i don't want my computer to stuff up like the old one, which is now very very slow and ads pop up all the time without warning even if ur not on website. oh yeah. does anyone know how to stop that? I tried to delete it from add/remove programs but it seems like the virus blocked that so i can't enter it. I run adware etc. it targets the problem but it can't remove it.

Totally free and works very good.

You should also include spyware/malware detection programs and use the with your AV, Here are links to free ones

spywareblaster: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
spybot search and destroy: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html
adawareSE: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
crapcleaner: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

winpatrol: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3380.html

The last one warns of any registry changes on your computer

AVG is a very good free virus checker! Updating is just as easy as with any software you buy, and new updates come rather quickly to protect yourself.

One thing I dont like about AVG though is simply the simple signing up process you have to go through to get a link through e-mail to get a link to download it, though its not really a hassle and they dont bother you with anything more.

Norton is also very good (I have it), and even though they suggest to update, you shouldn't have to as long as you have all the updates for it. I would think an update of the program would only mean a better user interface, etc, and not affect the protectiveness of the product.
