Default Antivirus Suggestions

I'm getting a antivirus, but i dont know which one is the best. I used to use kaspersky, but after it found a virus (which was merged with a main cabinate file), and deleted them both! Then my computer stopped working, so I had to reinstall windows. Can anyone advise me with some good antiviruses? Or can tell me how to get Kaspersky to only delete the virus, and not my main cabinate files?

On this forum you will get pretty much 2 answers.

If you want free, you will be recommended AVG (like Rudster mentioned).

If you want something you pay for, the majority of this forum (me being one of them) swears by NOD32.

Lol should have mentioned that there is a cult against McAfee and Norton here. They are resource hungry and really cause more problems than they are worth. In my opinion, they are viruses themselves.
