right now i have an 80gb ide HD but i want to add a bigger sata hd after i upgrade my system. how do i run the new hd as a slave drive just for storage?

You should be able to just plug it in and it works, since SATA doesn't deal with master/slave. At the most you will have to set the OS drive to boot first, but most PC's will skip HDD's that don't have an OS on them.

Another thing. I just bought an OEM 500GB Seagate SATA drive. It should detect it automatically but you will have to format it yourself. Easy way to do it is to go to start then right click my computer and select Manage. Then select Disk Management from the menu. Right click the drive that is not formatted and mark the partition as active after that on the bottom boxes under disk 1 (second hard drive is usually disk 1 because primary is disk 0) right click the box and format it. This is what I had to do to get mine working. After that you can assign it a name and a drive letter.
