When it comes to taking the old one out and putting the new one in does it automatically set its self up or do i have to download the drivers before swapping them?

More often than not the new video card will be detected but Windows will just install generic VGA drivers for it. Depending on which video card you have and which version of Windows you're running the correct drivers may be automatically downloaded via Windows Update. If not, just download the appropriate drivers and install manually.
