Are you sure nothing else has been changed? The problems you're having don't appear to be related to installing new RAM and especially if you've returned to the old "working" setup and are continuing to have the same issues.

Static shock may have affected the original stick of RAM. Try putting the new stick of RAM in the place of the original one and leaving the original one out of the system.
