Question Acronis alternative?

anyone have a tried and tested free alternative for acronis true image disk imaging software that works with windows xp and preferable windows vista 32-bit also? i'm not looking for recomendations from someone's google search, i would like input from someone who has actually used a free disk imaging software to create a back up image of their hard drive onto either a singel dvd or external hard drive (no multiple cd backups), then restored from booting to a recue disk(you create in the imaging software) and restored that disk image with no problems (like you can do in acronis). thank you.

I don't know of any that will truly clone Vista.
MS is afraid someone will try and steal something.

Lots of programs can, just not Ghost.

I'm not sure of any though....

Check out majorgeeks, see if they have anything: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads3.html

thanks...seagate's disk wizard (seems like it's basically a seagate branded version of acronis true image) will work good for my desktop where I have a seagate drive in it, but not my laptop which has a hitachi drive in it(following the legal, user agreement).

Hmm for your laptop check Hitachi's site. They may provide something.

I just looked throught hitachi's site and didn't see anything. I'd look again if I were you... it's possible i missed it.
