Default Accessing Internet

I am new to Computer Forums and would very much appreciate some advice.

I live in a house we there is a wireless router which I can connect to without any problems. I have a private laptop and a work laptop. Each time I attempt to connect to the internet using my private laptop, it seems to 'need' my work laptop in order to do so.

I have been told that my work laptop is acting as a DNS server - is this correct? If so, how do I get each to work independently of one another?

I'm really hoping someone can help!!

You should manually connect the private lappy to the routers IP address.
