Thumbs up 4870 X2 finally here

Anyone else as psyched as I am? In some places it's only a matter of hours until it's available for purchase I believe...

Anyone here planning on getting one? I should hopefully order through late this week .. hope it's nothing much over £300..

Just a couple of hours now, can't wait to see the full reviews with some more information on the hardware links between the two RV770s cores.

Notice I got myself a HD 4850. I'm going to pencil mod it and hopefully get it running at HD 4870 speeds.

....and I already have outdated hardware....although the 4870 X2 performs almost identically to two 4870s....although I'm sure the extra GB of memory helps :P

You can't stay updated in anything related to computers. There's always something better coming out.

You would only get one (or two) of these if you are planning on running very high resolutions.

I agree, unless you have a 30" panel, buying a card like this just isn't worth it. A single HD 4870 holds it's own even at the highest resolutions in current games.

Seems like it's better in all tests except for Crysis on a GTX 280.

Yeah the anandtech.com one doesn't load...

I wonder if it'd be worth me dropping money down on the 4850X2 when it arrives....
I can't see me using the power of the 4870X2 with resolutions max of 1680x1050 on my current monitor.

Wow though, 752 watts used when in load using 2 of those cards in Crossfire...

Not by much .. and the GTX280 is 2 gpus in one I believe isn't it?

Also .. WHAT happened to them being cheaper than the 280s? Or was it just for the signle 4870? £370 for a X2?! :s

Edit: .. It's freakin $559.99 on Newegg!! Like, £100 cheaper .. why why why can't Newegg ship to the UK??

The GTX 280 is a single monolithic die. GT200 is 576mm2, RV770 is a mere 256mm2. Nvidia and ATi chose different strategies, ATi's payed off, Nvidia's didn't

Do they not have a dual GPU version of the 280 then?

That's a hell of a size difference!!

No, the cost would simply be too high. It would almost definitely have to be a dual PCB board, not a single PCB like the X2. Two 512bit PCBs would be very complex and expensive. Not to mention the power requirements and heat output.

What I think we might see, is a dual GPU GX2 card made with the 55nm G92b with higher clock speeds and faster GDDR3 memory.
