80 Gig is no problem, but what type of hard drive, how many rpm, is there a cache, how many meg. Is it ATA 100 or 133. What is the 40 Gig hard drive you have now.
Not enough information to give a positive answer.

It should work just fine. Are you using a SATA hard drive or a regular EIDE hard drive? I'm sure if it's a new hard drive, it will do the job no problem for what you have regardless if it's SATA or not.

Dont' worry, hard drives won't affect your computer's gaming performance.

Skre an 80, 120 or even 300 Gig hard drive will fo for more space, but faster hard drives are better especially for gaming, they have a much faster transfer rate.
Its' better to have a 10,000 rpm SATA Western Digital 74 Gig with a 8 Meg cache, than a 5400 Maxtor ATA 100 with no cache.
