Default 3rd-Party Router Firmwares?

Should I do this or not...

I heard of DD-WRT, they make custom firmwares for Linksys WRT routers...I have a WRT54G. I want the best features I can and the best performance.

I'm posting this here because I don't wanna sign up anywhere else...again for one little thing.

When they work they are supposed to be great. I have heard stories of their firmware messing up routers.

See thats what i'm afraid of...I've done a few regular firmware upgrades from Linksys and they work fine though...
