I do not agree that 21/22" monitor is a big deal. Instead of buying a new monitor you should spend more on your new laptop.

I enjoy my two displays, they give me so much more productivity than normal use, even when I switch to a single now I continue trying to move it to the edge.

It is much cleaner now but they are pretty great! Once you go dual you don't go back.

Since nobody has answered, I will.

Yes you can use two different sizes/resolutions for extended desktop. The only time this won't work is with span mode, where the entire desktop is rendered across two monitors as if it were one (mostly used for gaming)

I have a 15.6 inch 768x1360 monitor and its fine with my 1920x1200's. Only problem is that windows tend to shrink/expand when they cross monitors unless they are perfectly matched.

I have an ASUS G50V-A1 Notebook. I connect a 22" Samsung Wide Screen with a HDMI cable. I could never go back to a single monitor after such bliss. It's much easier to get things done with the extra desktop room.
