what is the better choice? Also I was wondering how much of a upgrade either of these would from my ait 4870 x2?

6870? those are about the price of the 5770. If I were you, I would wait for the 6770 to get out and buy it for a even lower price.

the new 6 series from AMD are a little different the 69xx cards are what the 68xx should have been and the 68xx cards are what the 67xx cards should have been. they did it this way because the 57xx cards are selling very good right now and if they would have released a 67xx card it would have killed the 57xx which are currently very capable cards.

now i wouldnt say always go for a single card 2 6870s will likely beat out a 6970 and most games run great with dual GPUs i have no need for the power of 2 6870s or a 6970 i would go with just one 6870 since i only play at 1600 x 900 which that card has plenty for that

I have a 5770 and I beleive I should have bought a 5670, if you need a fast card, dont waste your money on somthing overkill, I would recomend 1 6870, tried to sli 2 8500gt's and got some weird crap on the screen, but they both work fine out of sli though...

OP is coming from a 4870x2. A single 6870 would be a downgrade.

Do what? I don't know where you're looking, but 6970's go for about $100 more than a 5770.

A 6970 is hardly overkill for just about any quad core rig. It might be a bit much for an Athlon II/Phenom I rig, but beyond that most anything should be able to utilize it.

A 6970 is hardly overkill. Most any quad core rig could utilize it perfectly well in games, though a stock-clocked Athlon II or Phenom I would probably lag behind a bit.

I'd say go for a 6970 or 6950. Won't be as fast as two 6870's, but it won't be nearly as expensive either.
