Default printer problem

my mom got a printer from her old job that they were just going to throw out so she got it and it came with the USB cable but i decided to buy the 1284 printer cable but my computer isn't detecting the printer after i hooked it up and everything...so now i dont know what to do...do i need the printer setup disk? if you can help me that would be great

1990, I Suggest Going To The Manufacturers Website And Downloading The Latest Drivers For Your Os.

Your computer can't communicate with the printer hardware without the necessary software (i.e., the printer drivers like the above poster mentioned).

Whats the printer brand? There will be drivers online for sure.

I know HP printers have all the software for their printers on their website. This might help you if you have a HP.
