New DVD Burner - file types??? help????

Hey guys and gals,

I have just purchased a new DVD burner, and to be honest i dont know where to start! If anyone knows of a good web link or have up front advice, please drop me a line.

I tried burning .avi and .mpg video clips but nero doesnt seem to allow it.
