Default Keyboards?

Hey, I was looking to maybe start messing around with a keyboard (synthesizer) but I have no clue where, to start. I was thinking maybe something I can plug in via USB or something. Any ideas would be helpful!

Off topic but pick up a Commodore 64 and use the SID chip synthesizer. It will be more fun
