Ipod not connecting to pc

My friend has a 3rd gen Ipod,He installed a firewire card and itunes,but the computerwill not connect the ipod,The pc makes no noice (like it normally does when u connect new hardware) also itune doesnt recognize it,what could be the problem??

Have you tried a different cable?

Nope does not show up in My computer,and no we havent tried another cable,thats what i suggested but he says its new.

Could it be he's got a bad USB port? has he tried plugging into a different one?

how long do you wait for it? Similar thing happened to me. Plugged it in, computer didn't notice it, waited for about 5 minutes, then it showed up. Try starting iTunes before you plug it in, if you haven't tried that already.
