Smile cooling fan problem on laptop, can anyone advise??

Hi guys, am new to the site and must tell u am not a PC specialist or expert in anyway.
i go a laptop acer intel core 2 150 ghz, 2gb ram.160 hard drive.it was at origin pre loaded on vista. A friend of mine replaced the vsta with xp professional and later carried out a partition, loading up both vista an xp so I have the choice when I boot my pc.
the problem is that since I got both systems loaded up , when my pc is turned on and set on vista or xp It often times turn off by itself. THE reason being because the cooling fan does not work properly and I notice that sometimes it stay silent and stationary that renders my pc overheated and ultimately turn it off by itself all of a sudden.
Please note that for as long as my pc was loaded with ONE SYStem ONLY (i.e xp)I never experienced this hassle, it only started giving this problem once my pc got pre loaded with the 2 systems. can anone explain why and how I can fix this?? thanks in advance

Have you installed all the correct drivers for your laptop?

Replace the fan/Blow out the dust if any. And or get a laptop cooling tray.

You may have to install the Chipset drivers from the website which may have something to do with controlling the fans as well. Its dumb how they set it up but its needed if you want the fans to work

I have an Acer laptop that I came with Vista, I put XP on too. I get the same problem. Its not the fan, its Windows. When you totaly shut it down and start it later, I'd bet the fan works. I found out after some research that when you put your laptop on standby and sometimes hibernate modes, when you wake the laptop the fan doesnt spring to life, causing it to overheat and shut off. Personaly, I can use hibernate, some cant. But if I put it on hibernate mode, when i open it again the fan wont kick in.

Just some food for thought.

Some laptops weren't designed for some OS's. The Vista it came with likely had some onboard fan controlling software that isn't offered for that computer in XP. Happens all the time. Always check to see if your laptop can support certain OS's because things like the touchpad and fan control software are designed with the OEM OS in mind and sometimes they don't make the software/drivers for other OS's.
