what is your ACTUAL download speed

now I'm not talking about what speedtest.net says it is I am talking about when your PC is actually downloading something. note: speed will differ depending on server you are downloading from. I am downloading from origin and reaching almost 2MB/s it's topped once at 2.4MB/s

One reason why it's difficult to compare download speeds is because Speedtest.net gives it's speed in Mb (megabits) per second while most download programs specify downloads in either KB or MB (Kilobytes or Megabytes) per second.

I download at about 1-10 MB/s from origin depending on the game. Its weird. My internet speed is 10 Mb/s down and 5 up. When I downloaded titanfall I was downloading at 10 MB/s and I don't know why lol. Anyway nice on dead space. Scariest game I have ever played. The best of the series too.

Yeah its pretty scary..its free for a short time so i got it. And its weird on steam fastest i get is 1.6mb/s

I'm on a 20Mb down and 10Mb up. I get up to 2.0MB when doing naughty things at that "ARG Matey" place. Uploads are pretty quick but never bothered to take a reading.

Speedtest.net tests your download/upload speeds using tiny packets and bouncing them off of the nearest 'server' and seeing how quickly it can get them to and from there.

When you're actually downloading information/data/films/games from a live web server or filehost (Steam for example) there are a lot more factors. Additional factors include things like Host server load (how many others are also trying to download at the same time?), latency, line speed, data quality, etc.

EDIT: Also, internet download SPEEDS are measured in MBPS (MegaBITS per second) or KBPS (KiloBITS per second).

The SIZE of a file is measures in megaBYTES and KiloBYTES. some ISPs also but a data limit on there internet connection, also measures in various denominations of Byte.

Not always displayed in Mb's. My software goes by how much it's getting. If below a Meg it shows Kilo. If Meg and above, it's switches to MB.

ISP's use high number MegaBits as a sales gimmick. 20 Megabits sounds so sweet to some. But if you break it down it's not all that impressive. 2.5MB. And yeah he's right about varying factors. If you aren't getting that, then be patient and try later. Things are getting real busy on the WWW. Wait till everything calms down late at night and go for it.

The convention is that Mb or Kb (lower case b) indicates bits per second while MB or KB (upper case B) indicates bytes per second.

I think my download speed just from watching something download is about 25MB or so and I agree much faster at night. I use Linux on some of my computers and downloading that is much faster at night or on the weekends even with FIOS.
