Trouble installing a graphics card.

Well, first id like to say i do know how to install graphic cards, i have done it before. But theres a problem in this case.
Im upgrading my APG graphic card to a newer more powerfull one. I cant install the drivers if the new one isnt plugged in, but if i remove the current one i cant use my monitor. The pc once once used a standard one connected to the motherboard. A long time ago i had a crap one put in to take the load off it, they closed up the old VGA out and told me not to use it, but i thought if i unplugged the current one, would the old VGA become active again thus solving my problem?

Put your new card in, boot into safe mode, install the driver, reboot into Windows
