OK well today, I was sitting around and looking at my CPU and I decided to destroy it because I was bored waitin for my new mobo to come. So I grabbed some sand paper and tore it up

AMD Athlon X2 5000+

Also lapped my new custom "Juice" Heatsink w/ 90mm fan

LOL It's a Juice heatsink... some day i'm going to be a famous owner of a large specialty overclocking cooling solutions company... This is my first prototype

Anyway, the end result is a nice shiny CPU and a somewhat shiny prototype HSF... Have fun post up yours

Here's another custom prototype I created fo db4rt, this one's called "koolkube", the other one that is above this is called "rombust"

Well anyway, let's see your lapped CPUs and heatsinks, or anything else you might have lapped such as iPod backs, they get pretty scratched and they would look good lapped, I did it once...

It's basically getting all the tiny groves and curves out of a heatsink, and CPU heatspreader to make the heat transfer between the two more efficient.

Whats the best way to go about doing this.

Go to the hardware store, get 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200 etc grit sandpaper, then tape the sandpaper to a flat surface, and put the heatsink on top, then sand. Start with 400 grit. Then 600, and so on. Repeat for the CPU, but start with 600 (Don't use 400 for CPU). Remember, this is a dangerous thing so don't rush it, you'll probably have to spend a couple hours without your computer. As long as you don't accidentally sand it wrong, then it's not too easy to mess up. But don't use too much pressure, and if your CPU has pins, be careful not to bend them.

When you are done, the CPU should be mirror finished, free of any grooves and gaps. It helps the heat transfer from CPU to Heatsink.
