Car Thread!

Driver > Car.

Everyone has this phase. They start out FWD, and then they long for RWD. And vice versa. AWD and 4WD get thrown in there somewhere.

Exactly my thought....

An S2000, sure, but a f-in Miata! C'mon!

The S2000 is at least $8-10,000 over what I can afford. I'm still a college student after all. Don't forget the S2000 is best buddies with Evos and STIs on almost all insurance companies' black lists. You can thank all those who street race and inevitably crash them.

Miata beats BMW any day. As long as you know what you are doing.

I wouldn't go as far as to say it outright beats any BMW. It really depends what you plan on doing with the car to begin with. If I had the money, my first choice would've been a Z3 M Coupe, but those are around the same price range as an S2000 if not more.

Glad to see you're back posting in the car thread as usual.

BMW ---> Miata. wtf?

Yep. Dollar for dollar, you can't go wrong with the Miata.

Heh, I'm going from RWD to RWD.

News to me :O

Yep. The 1994-1997 Miata had a 1.8-litre straight four engine that only put out about 130hp, but the curb weight was only a bit shy of 2,200lbs. A Lotus Elise is a tad under 2,000lbs. So a Miata is pretty f*cking light.

It's perfect for me as a college student as well. With a 5-speed manual (I'll shoot you if you buy an automatic Miata) you can easily get 30+mpg. Filling up is only $30 or so since the fuel tank is about 10 gallons. You're not required to fill it up with 91 Octane either since it's not a high compression engine. :D

Near 50/50 weight balance too.

It pretty much has a 50/50 weight distribution.

Quite a few cars have it...I know the BMW E36 was highly regarded in that matter. Both coupe and sedans have roughly 50/50 weight distribution. If you look in my engine bay, that straight six is pushed as far back into the firewall as possible without making it inconvenient to work on the engine.

I know the Z4 and S2000 are about 50/50 as well. Most roadsters will just because of the nature of their design (driver sits right in front of rear axle, engine above or behind the front axles etc).

Great balance, strong frame, extremely light weight, only thing it lacks is power.
I wanted to get an older Miata for a project, drop a 302(yes they fit great, and the car still remains 50/50 dist), and enter it in the Grassroots Motorsports challenge. I wanted to start a club at MTU to compete, but I couldn't get a place to work on the car at the school...

What's your plans for the Miata?

I'm planning on getting a little Mazda this summer too, and RX-7. First gen, and putting my 302 in that. I've been doing a lot of reading, and it's supposed to be fairly easy, and the car can handle the power plus some on it's own.
Imagine that, 2400 lb car with 270hp... And I would even paint it flat black(cheap). I could play with 350hp Mustangs and Camaros...
