Car Thread!

Guys (or alvino I guess) I need schooling on the E30. There's a 89 325is nearby that looks like it would make an excellent car for little bro. $2600 obo. How's availability of parts for this beast? Dark grey, 5 speed, the thing is classy.

Mom says no cause I don't think it has airbags (?) but I say Sparcos and 4 pt harness!

That's why Ferrari's sound so distinct though. It's a really high rev sound because of the crankshaft.
It has something to do with the exhaust too doesnt it? My friend said one of his Dad's(car geek, lol) friends put a setup like ferraris have on his corvette and it sounds cooler even on just a vette.

That's not bad. Pictures? What's the condition of everything? The E30 is a pretty nice car especially if you want to just play around with it. Not especially powerful, but it's so light and small that you can just chuck them around corners with ease. Parts availability depends. It's not as common as the E36 so the range and variation isn't as high, but there is a pretty big community surrounding E30's. Just search the interwebs. :)

As for airbags, there should be one in the steering wheel as the E30's came standard with SRS airbags, I believe. You should definitely get some buckets though. Recaros if you have the money, but Corbeau's are the best bang for the buck in my opinion. As for harnesses, you should check your state laws, but I think in California it's illegal to use any type of harnesses.

I need some buckets. These Falkens give me so much grip that I just slide around in these shitty leather seats which have little flaps for bolsters. Pretty much my knee is the only way I can stay in one place when I go down Highway 9. :p

Ferrari probably does tune the exhausts, but the crank shaft is really what makes the difference between a high tone Italian V8 and a deep, throaty American V8.

Ive seen a video on youtube with a ferrari with straightpipes and cats removed and sounds like freaking F1 car amazing lol...

The firing order of the Ferrari is different than American V8's.

Harnesses illegal in Cali? I thought those would be safer than standard belts...

Yeah, it's fine to use on tracks and in auto-x events, but for normal driving you have to use the OEM seatbelts.

The problem is with a tight harness you get whiplash if you're in a wreck. That's why race drivers have either neck braces, or elastic straps bolted to the helmet, or both.

The beemer seems to be in pretty good shape from pictures. I just don't know how they could fit an airbag in that tiny steering wheel. And I'm not a firm believer in monstrous power in a small car (although it is nice just for the OMFG factor :D). 170 in such a small car is good, and I have seen the aftermarket offerings... wow. Seems like it would be easy to make 200.

I'd probably just try to track down some decent Sparco street seats because I'm not a huge fan of Corbeau and don't have the moola for Recaros, lol. But then again, the car would be for little bro so we would get a seat that fits a tall skinny dude best. It needs to fold since it's a coupe.

Oh, and street legality in Alabama? LOL. You can run straight pipes out your hood for all they care.

omg i need a new ac compressor for my 1998 contour it sounds so bad right now...
but pretty much all of the shops are closed....
omg what happens if i drive while i need a new ac compressor that sounds bad it sounds like the pulley could just break off at any moment...

well then, you may need to get a new pully if it brakes off... omg, just a possibility though...

Compressors are pretty expensive though, I wouldnt go to a shop, I would go to a junkyard.

Yeah, that's why they have the HANS in pretty much every form of motorsports.

Haha, trust me...with the way the E30 handles, you don't need power. Just the speed you can carry into corners makes up for any lack of straight line power. As for aftermarket offerings, they have a lot of things but just be aware that even for such an old car, parts are pretty damned expensive.

As for seats, Sparco is good, but for the money Corbeau is just so good. The construction isn't the best compared to Recaro or Bride, but you can't get much better for around $300 a seat. As for recliners, plenty of companies make competition and reclining buckets so that's not anything to be worried about. Size shouldn't be a problem if he's a tall skinny dude.

Hahahah, what about smog? Or do you just pay off your mechanics. :p Yeah, in California the State Refs are gone now due to lack of funding, but passing smog and all that is still a hassle and the CHP are always looking for excuses to cite you, especially if it's the end of the month.

Oh and give your bro the Focus and take the E30. :D I would. Then again...I am a BMW whore, so yeah. :p
