I am seeking any solid reference (article, website, book, anything!!!) that will explain the intricacies of the code that makes up an .eps file.

I have noticed that Illustrator puts a tremendous amount of seemingly uneccesary code in any .eps... even a blank one!

I downloaded an outdated PDF from adode resource area but its not comprehensive enough and its from 1992.

Basically, I need to manufacture .eps files with a piece of software I am designing. So essentially, I am writing a text file with instructions on how to render the .eps. The could have images, fonts, shapes.... etc just like an .eps created in Illustrator or some comprable program.

Thanks,
Joe

wow a pdf as old as me ... what dose eps mean in full?
eps stands for Encapsulated PostScript.

Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) is a standard format for importing and exporting PostScript language files in all environments. It is usually a single page PostScript language program that describes an illustration. The purpose of the EPS file is to be included as an illustration in other PostScript language page descriptions. The EPS file can contain any combination of text, graphics, and images. An EPS file is the same as any other PostScript language page description, with some restrictions.

neochivers how many of you 1173 posts have actually been sane or sensible?

All file formats start with a header, to say what sort of file it is... for example PDF file all start with %%PDF%

(open one with notepad and you'll see)...

http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/quite/eps2.htm

there is some information, nothing really all that consise though...

you might do better to perhaps look for a community developing software, (try sourceforge) to see if you could get some help...

(actually, follownig my own sugestion I found...
http://imgtops.sourceforge.net/
If yuo have a look at the source code, you should get a pretty good idea of what to do.

Just saying Google it, doesn't actually help anybody, and it also prooves that you don't actually know anything about it, and couldn't even for a decent google search yourself as a way of helping...

If you just search EPS, or EPS file format you don't get a lot, so you have to do a few google searches using keywords specific to file formats in order to get anywhere...

Not al questions can be answered with the words google it, and I also assume that he did do a google search before coming here, but didn't have much sucess in that search...
